Thoughts on perception amongst people on Narendra Modi government

I am going to specifically direct this blog post to Narendra Modi & Amit Shah.  Being a huge fan of both, I would like to point out a sense of disillusionment creeping in in the Aam janta.  There are various perceptions amongst people, some true and some untrue.  Let me highlight a few of those:

  1. Narendra Modi is only moving in foreign lands, giving speeches to NRIs and ignoring the Indians in India
  2. Narendra Modi is saying that we have achieved almost zero corruption in government offices, that things in India are already awesome in the first 18 months etc
  3. Congress is going to town saying that this government is more for corporates than for the Aam Aadmi and I know of many BJP supporters who are actually believing it
  4. Narendra Modi promised to bring back black money but I don't see any results on the ground
  5. Frustration amongst BJP supporters that opposition propaganda is not being countered effectively
  6. No people have gone to jail for corruption which was the main plank on which Lok Sabha election was won by the BJP

I am just an observer and a fan of the BJP.  While I admit that my experience in dealing with political issues is far less as compared to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, I would like to offer some feedback on how these perceptions can be handled.

  1. BJP has some fabulous speakers/spokespersons like Meenakshi Lekhi, MJ Akbar. They are not being used effectively. BJP seems to have forgotten to set agenda. I feel BJP is being too reactive and that is playing in the hands of the opposition.
  2. Have a PC on a daily basis (even if for 15-20 minutes) around 8 pm. Highlight any achievements and clarify any crap being generated. In this era of social media, rumors spread thick & fast. They need to be neutralized immediately. PIB offering clarifications 3 days later does not help.
  3. Anurag Thakur saying playing against Pakistan is not possible in August & now having talks with PCB is sheer hypocrisy. This shows BJP as weak and contrary to Narendra Modi's famous assertion that there cannot any talks (political or not) in the face of bullets. Nerandra Modi needs to come down hard on such people in his party.
  4. While I understand foreign trips are essential & bring much needed foreign investments into India. It also helps creates a lot of jobs.  I have not heard any BJP spokesperson put this argument effectively to the people. Even well meaning BJP supporters are quiestioning Narendra Modi's foreign trips.
  5. Cases against Vadra, Gandhi family etc need to be put on fast track. Perception amongst people is that some people (namely Arun Jaitley) is shielding these people. BJP is now being perceived as a party which lied during elections that these crooks will be brought to justice.
  6. For heavens sake, get rid of your spokespersons like Patra, Kohli, Sudhanshu etc. Stop going to useless debates on TV channels. Have press conferences and address issues, take questions form the media. Have MJ Akbar, Lekhi, Amit Shah (when needed), Irani address these PCs.
  7. Please don't talk in absolutes - "Humne corruption ko mita diya hai", "Hum 30 kms road banayenge" etc. Please show the people, then talk.
  8. Please use Press conferences effectively to lay out your achievements:
    1. We have removed x amount of tolls in blah states
    2. We have laid this much amount of Nat'l Highways in these regions. We are expeting to finish this highway in 201x
  9. Please create an effective set of local leaders in various states. Modi cannot be a face in state elections as well .

My kid's notes

Just like any father, I feel proud when my 5 year old son does something that makes you go "damn...how does he get these ideas?". Recently, he wrote about our trip to my hometown of Porbandar in his daily notebook that he has to ready in school. He had gone to see Peacocks and saw a lot of them. Here is what he wrote about it and then drew a picture. Looking at the picture, the peacock on the right is standing with his feet firmly planted on the ground. However, the peacock on the left has bent his legs and is getting ready for take off. I was zapped since I didn't expect such thinking from him.

Itching to move out

For the past few weeks, I have been itching to move out of Bangalore to may be a place like Ahmedabad. Bangalore has the most beautiful weather but it also has its mix of traffic, chaos and the like. Having lived away from Gujarat for so long (~25 years now), it seems like I want to go back and live there again. Those familiar sounds of the language of Gujarati coupled with sweet smell of fafda, jalebi, undhiu, khandvi and a chance to be close to my parents and my brother's family are probably are forcing me to think in this way. After being away from family for so long, in a way, I seem o be craving to live with them one more time. I don't know whether this desire is good or bad but it is there and I am just acknowledging it. I also long to be close to an ashram where I can go study Vedanta. "Who am I?" is a question I want to experience in this life time. Yes, I have jumped topics but then these are random thoughts. :)

Communalism and Equal Rights

I am not a politician or even a writer. However, I am concerned with what I am seeing in India. There are couple of aspects that really worry me about the country. One is when politicians try to brand themselves as secular/non-communal and others who subscribe to another ideological theory. I have seen the Congress party claim that BJP is communal. Why? Because it has affiliations with RSS, who in turn has affiliations with VHP? However, if you look at the dictionary, ‘communalism’ is defined as follows: Main Entry: com•mu•nal•ism Pronunciation: -n&l-"i-z&m Function: noun 1 : social organization on a communal basis 2 : loyalty to a sociopolitical grouping based on religious or ethnic affiliation - com•mu•nal•ist /-n&l-ist/ noun or adjective If you read the above dictionary meaning of communalism carefully, then Congress itself is guilty of being communal, as they so frequently like to label their opposition. Congress has been in power for greater part since India's...
